The Bug and Warrior Queen
I was sitting on the bus and there was an argument. This guy was trying to hustle the bus driver so he could get a free ride. The driver wasn't going along with this. He said, "You're trying to scam me. If you want to do that, you could get off the bus. I'm not providing a ride for some scammer. It's another thing if you just said that you wanted a free ride." The passenger said, "I want a free ride but I'm not scammer." The driver scoffed and said a little bit under his breath. But it didn't end there.
Suddenly, the passenger said, "Ya know? This is a rich white town. If I was honest and just said I needed a ride... I can't just ask for a free ride here. They'd just kick me off from the start." The bus driver told him that it had nothing to do with race. I wonder what got the passenger to that place - to that train of thought. I was fascinated that he was believes that telling a lie will get him farther in life than a truth. But I thought what was more interesting was that he thinks he should get something for nothing. Personally, I believe that nothing in this world is free. You have to pay back in some way. So, it's strange that he thinks by milking off the kindness of others and blame it his problem on his financial dilemmas is a way to live...it's honest yet something silly. Life is what you make it. There's not much time to sit in the passenger seat if you're really living.
I agree with you.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed that story. I thought it would help the passenger if he would take more responsibility for his fate.. even IF there is truth to some outside force having caused his misfortune.
